The Provoked Wife
Conceptual Project
Playwright: John Vanbrugh
Time: England 1690s
“Marry in haste and repent in leisure” is the theme of this comedy as it follows the lives of the Brutes, an unhappily married couple forever regretting their vows. The Restoration period was a time of extravagant fashion, a trait that lead to the creation and use of fashion plates. Inspired by this, I designed the costumes to look like illustrations that would have existed at the time. To add to the levity of each character and their pursuits of love, I used brighter tones, creating some playful visuals to match each characters’ “colorful” personality.
