Man of La Mancha
Conceptual Project
Playwright: Dale Wasserman
Time: Spain 1590s
Based in the epic Spanish novel, Don Quixote, Man of La Mancha is a play within a play. Finding himself in jail, the playwright Miguel De Cervantes stages a show to defend his honor, transforming his fellow prisoners into characters from his story. Traditionally, prisoners are depicted in distressed off-white garments. Wanting to move away from this trope, I designed the costumes to be simple, featuring only subtle patterns as decoration. The muddier hues help convey the prison’s dingy conditions while aligning with 1500s Spanish preference for austere colors. Items such as Don Quixote’s armor further hint at Spanish fashion, being modeled after pieces of the period.
