Builds

With seven years of experience in costume shops, I have done a variety of alterations, repairs and builds. Below are some select projects.

Corset

Designer and Stitcher

Created for the course Draping and Flat Patterning. A labor of love, this project involved creating two mockups (one rough and one refined). For the finished garment, panels of damask fabric (outer) are flatlined to cotton coutil fabric (inner), providing structure and durability. Spiral steel boning add further support, giving shape to the garment. A busk closure is featured in front panels. The back panels are grommeted, allowing for lacing. The corset’s edges are finished with bias tape made from the damask.

Into the Woods

Costume Design by Becky Wetzel

Pattern created by Kevin Ross

Consisting of a base dress and apron, this costume was designed to transform from an intact garment (Act I) to rags (Act II). The base dress features a cartridge pleated skirt and gathered sleeves. The sleeves are quick-rigged with snap tape for easy removal. The apron has a skirt consisting of panels that mimic flower petals. The “petals” overlap and are sewn together to emulate box pleats. Eyelet lace acts as trim on the apron.

Turban

Designer and Stitcher

Created for the course Costume Crafts. Based on the Three Wise Men, this headpiece is for the magi Casper, who some sources claim came from Arabia. The base is made of buckram, providing a sturdy foundation for the headpiece’s layers. Poly-fil is used to mimic the voluminous silhouettes of headwear worn at the time. Embroidered ribbon is used as a trim for the headpiece’s rim. A centerpiece comprised of costume jewels and metal pieces (found objects) decorates the front.
